| Notes: | Jan 19, 08 - Constantine II was the eldest surviving son of Constantine the Great. He felt perhaps entitled to inherit the whole empire just as his own father did but was disappointed to learn on Constantine's dying wish was for his three sons to receive equal shares in the domains. For a couple of years a grumpy Constantine II sat in his corner of the world until he felt the moment was right to pick a fight with his youngest brother Constans. He lost that fight and then there were two brothers left.
I really liked this coin when I saw it at auction online and knew I had a winner when it came in the mail. A fully-silvered AE3 is just about unheard of this late into the empire. Coins were rapidly declining not only in value but also in quality of workmanship. To bring out a silver coating measured in a few microns of width was a delicate and no doubt costly proposition when we're talking about the hundreds of thousands that were minted in any one year. And all for nothing since the public which used them had long stopped believing in these as "silver" coins. Therefore, the charade stopped and silver disappeared from the marketplace altogether. | ||||
