| Notes: | Jan 19, 08 - His real name was Octavian (Augustus being just a title) and he was easily the most revered emperor the Romans had. Coins with his name and portrait were being struck centuries after his death and he himself was worshipped as a god. Coincidentally, he was also the longest reigning emperor as well clocking in a record 56 years on the post. That's longer than almost any head of state to this day. Go on, think of an important political figure who was king or president for as long. Hmm?
The gouge marks on this coin were made during some ancient transaction to make sure that the coin was solid silver to the core. This defacing was commonplace because many silver-washed copper counterfeits were showing up. Today these ancient counterfeits, called fourrees, are collectible but always trade at a fraction of the cost of the real deal. Typically, one knows he or she has a fourree simply because the coating has worn through to reveal the coppery interior of the coin as otherwise the ancient counterfeiters were often just as skilled engravers as their official counterparts. In fact, it is often speculated that it might have been corrupt mint officials who were in the business of making the counterfeits in the first place. | ||||
