| Notes: | Jul 4, 11 - Romans in general were very much into naming their kids after themselves. Although the practice is common today (hey, I'm a junior myself) it's not so often you see daughters taking their mother's name. Faustina is just one of several Roman empresses named after Mom and, unluckily for us, this poses a small challenge in being able to tell the two apart based on coin legends.
But based on portraits alone this task becomes easier since Faustina the daughter looks considerably younger than her Mom. Neither of the two will outlive their husband which leaves us also with a fairly sizeable posthumous coin series. Again, one must resort to deciphering the portraits rather than the legends to help us figure out who's who. Finally, both have a similar overall output of coins although in the case of Faustina I the bulk are minted posthumously while for Faustina II they are more evenly divided. This one was minted during her lifetime. Part of my Roman Emperors collection |
