| Notes: | Dec 21, 07 - Feeling the overwhelming need to not be outdone by Nero and Caligula, Commodus one-upped his predecessors in sheer intensity of bloodlust and carnage. Add incest and a jury-rigged career as a gladiator moonlighter and you get of one of Roman history's most memorable characters (for all the wrong reasons!).
When collecting Roman coins I often have these little "obssessive compulsive" goals. In my mind I've determined what I would like each emperor's coin to look like. In every case I would prefer a portrait coin than one without and place far more importance on the portrait than whatever is on the reverse. If I can help it, I prefer a lifetime issue to a postumous and a silver to a bronze (and, duh, a gold to a silver). To me one in a nicer grade is more desirable than one that is worn even if it's rarer or costlier. In other words, I'm just shallow, okay? I can be picky about legends too. For Commodus I held out for a legend that bore his name out in full rather than the more common abbreviations. Just my thing. Can't explain it. |
