| Notes: | Dec 21, 07 - After over 100 years of nice emperors who knew what they were doing we get our real first stinker in the form of Commodus, a mad man in the true sense of the word. His assassination caught people by surprise only in the sense that it took so many years before someone got it right.
Then all hell broke lose. The next guy was another decent and competent ruler but the army was unruly and preferred rather someone who would make them rich and the hell with the state of affairs. So that's exactly what they got. But there was still an old-guard general who couldn't tolerate insubordination - or much of anything else for that matter. Septimius Severus came to town and kicked ass. Four pairs of cheeks to be exact. After the last of the contenders were dealt with he pointed the finger at the Roman elite and said "who else is gonna try my patience?" and everyone fell in line. In time through his hard discipline and draconic measures Rome was back in business on sound footing despite the grumbling from the nobility about his hard-ass ways. He got the last laugh though when he kciked the bucket and left his two inept kids to take over; Caracalla and Geta. But that story's for another chapter. Severus' coins are plentiful in all grades so why not splurge a bit and get a nice, minty-fresh coin? |
