| Notes: | Feb 7, 08 - Imperial Rome, Nero Caesar, 54 - 68 AD. Sestertius, c.64 AD. Rome. 26.53g. NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GER. P. M. TR.P. IMP P., his laureate head lt. / S. C. Triumphal arch with a garland hanging in the archway. which is adorned with ornamental figures. On the left side within a niche is a statue of Mars, holding a spear and shield, two figure decorate the border beneath him. The top of the arch is surmounted by the emperor himself in a facing quadriga escorted on rt. by Victory, who holds a wreath and palm, and on lt. by Pax, who holds a branch and cornucopiae. Just below the quadriga on the lt. and rt. are soldiers and the ornamental reliefs decorate the other faces and plinth of the arch. RIC 148; BMCRE 188. VF with a few minor areas of pitting or light roughness. Overall in excellet style with a superbly detailed reverse showing all the elements of the truimphal arch. The hole was placed in antiquity, but all the art is there and the piece has great eye appeal. Struck during the year that the Great Fire of 64 AD ravaged Rome and caused major damage, eventually providing space for Nero to construct his palace, Domus Aurea |

[+ Post Your Own ] A pity that the reverse is so much smaller than the obverse.
