| Notes: | Aug 23, 05 - Livia, the first Augusta, does not appear on coins very often. Her husband Augustus apparently never liked her much and, in fact, didn't honor her at all on coins during his long reign. It was not until after his death that she gets a brief run of these coins made by her son Tiberius. And while it was understood back then as now that the obverse is her portrait they couldn't quite bring themselves to spell out her name in the legend but rather chose instead to name her patron godesses such as Salus, Pietas and Justitia.
This here coin is a notch away from being completely worn smooth so all the above is for naught since you can't really tell what she looked like anyway. Just wait until I can come up with, say, $500 to buy a nicer example, okay? But hey, whadda you want for twenty bucks? |

[+ Post Your Own ] "Her husband Augustus apparently never liked her much"??? Where did that line come from? I am guessing you are joking here. Matt
