Agrippina, die Gemahlin des Germanicus, wurde 29 n. Chr. verbannt und machte ihrem Leben 33 n. Chr. im Alter von 46 Jahren ein Ende. Sie hatte neun Kinder zur Welt gebracht. Caligula, einer ihrer Söhne, ließ das Stück zur Erinnerung an seine Mutter prägen und verweist mit dem Revers auf die seltene, vom Senat beschlossene Ehrung, daß sie als Frau per Maultierwagen in Rom fahren durfte (vergl.
