| Notes: | May 20, 08 - Unlisted in Varbanov, Moushmov, SNG Hungary and SNG Germany. The coin is not correctly attributed in Boric-Brescovic, however, the image for coin # 138 is probably the same coin (it is difficult to be certain due to partial legend loss on the B-B specimen).
Jekov's rating of R2 does not take into consideration the legend blunder present in the obverse legend ("VAG" instead of the correct "AVG"). The correct rarity is likely in the R7 to R8 range due to the fact that only 3 (possibly 4) specimens have been found in my research (1 is known to Martin, 1 is my example, 1 is held in a private collection, and likely a fourth is imaged in Boric-Brescovic). Due to the low number of known specimens (all of which appear to be obverse die matches) it is likely that this error was only present on one die. This coin does demonstrate some circulation wear on the points of higher relief, but enough detail remains to prove the superior skill of the celator who prepared the portrait of Gordian III. The patina is a gorgeous glossy dark green color and the details are emphasized with attractive light brown earthen deposits which I've elected not to clean so as to preserve the present aesthetics of the coin. All that said, I'm enormously pleased to have such a lovely coin with this rare error. |
