I am very pleased with this coin thanks to its near untouched level of detail, especialy the hair and Philip's face which is about as nicely preserved as any I've ever seen on a Viminacium coin for Philip I (utilizing the later realistic version of his portrait).

This coin is my first higher grade Philip I Sestertius purchase that actualy utilizes a portrait of Philip I instead of Gordian III. This more accurate style is employed later in year 5 through the end of year 9.

There is some minor roughness below the midline on both sides which shows up more prominently in the photo then it does in hand. The roughness is placed on about the same area on both sides of the coin as if someone in ancient times stomped on or drove over the lower half of the coin causing the light scuffing. This is the only real distraction from an otherwise VF+ to EF coin.

After having seen the detail in Philip's face I couldn't resist this buy. Because Philip I sestertii are so common, I knew that I would be able to wait and eventualy the right coin for me would turn up.

My personal buying philosophy has been to be picky when shopping for common stuff (ie look for stellar specimens and bargains). For rare stuff, the rarer the coin the less picky on grade or price I can afford to be. When it comes to the exceptional must buy coins, I try my best to be prepared to pay whatever must be paid. :(

Finaly, I would like to thank Tom Mullally for taking the photo of this coin for me. I didn't like the seller's photo, so Tom generously agreed to take the photo for me.
