Notes:Oct 3, 08 - Unlisted in Jekov, Boric-Brescovic, SNG Germany, and Moushmov. The citation in Varbanov is directed to the same coin cited by Pick. SNG Hungary's attribution provided is incorrect, however the coins imaged for numbers 412 and 413 are a match to this coin. Varbanov's R3 rarity and price estimate are inaccurate and likely reflect the more common year 11 variants of Dupondii struck in Decius' name. This is the 5th specimen known to me of this exact variant and the 7th of this general type (year 12 Dupondii for Decius). Based on these numbers a rough rarity on Jekov's scale falls around R8 (of 10).

I've spent about a year and a half trying to get a copy of this coin from a private collection in Europe with no sucess. Luckily, this superior example showed up on ebay and I won it for about a third of what I offered the European collector. Nice! :)

Dupondii of Decius for year 11 are pretty uncommon, but not impossibly to find. Year 12 specimens are so rare that this is the first example I ever found for sale.

The variation worth noting on this coin is that there is no legend break on the reverse. The other type (of which I know only three examples) has the standard legend break and is otherwise identical to this coin. You can see my example here:

The present coin demonstrates an above average level of detail in the obverse portrait. All examples of this coin type typicaly show some sort of loss of detail in the legends and/or in the designs. In this case there is some wear in the legends and in the reverse image, but trace details remain to allow for a complete attribution.
