| Notes: | Sep 9, 08 - Old Vespasian's greatest contribution to mankind was the Colosseum which is, to this day, Italy's most recognizable landmark. Well, come to think of it, maybe Pisa's tower is but details, details!
So, anyway, to build that massive structure took lots of money and time and labor. And this coin right here probably came out of Vespasian's treasury to pay a worker or for some building materials. We'll never know, of course, how this or any other ancient coin was used but that's the beauty and wonder of these things in the first place: to ponder about what they might have been used for, in whose pockets they jingled and to consider for a brief moment what a tangible link to our past these artifacts are. |
