This coin comes in as certainly one of the nicer looking Decius coins I've seen in the past three years. There is a some slight circulation wear and a scratch on the reverse which lead me to grade this puppy somewhere squarely between Fine and Very Fine. There realy isn't a whole lot to say about this coin that I haven't covered on my other Decius coins. The legend dates this coin to the earlierst portions of Decius' reign, before he became "Trajan" Decius. This coin type is one of the more common Viminacium coins out there. Following Decius' taking control of Viminacium (possibly before the Philips' deaths) these coins were struck in an unusualy large number. One possible reason might be that the region needed a sudden influx of provincial bronze coins after production had been shut down during Pacatian's short lived capture of Viminacium. Perhaps more likely though, the sudden flush of money into the region might have been designed to stabilize the region and garner support for his reign from both the local legions and the citizens (which is very much in line with the sudden explosion of reverse design propoganda that is characteristic of years 11 and 12). |
