| Notes: | Oct 1, 08 - Nerva, a career politician, was a prime suspect in the murder of Domitian who, in all likelihood, had probably signaled some displeasure towards Nerva for whatever reason. If this happened, Nerva's only recourse short of suicide would have been to fall in line with other senators not in the good graces of the emperor and try their odds at killing Domitian before he ordered their executions.
Following the assassination Nerva was not immediately hailed emperor by the armies. Only a very liberal greasing of the palms to the soldiers, an embarrassingly apologetic speech and the nomination of their favored general Trajan as next in line was enough to get their reluctant approval. And two years later the old man was dead of natural causes anyway. |
