About this seller
Notes:Oct 13, 08 - Domitian was an emperor who did not join his late father and brother with the honorific title of Divus upon his death. One reason there was no love for this guy is that he thought nothing of executing even trivial rivals and chose to rule as a fearful tyrant. Another reason we can guess at his unpopularity would be his relationships with women. While he was generally a nasty, equal-opportunity misanthrope sort of guy he reserved his love, meaning the carnal sort, for his niece Julia Titi - the daughter of his brother Titus whom he is said to have a slightly less loving relationship with.

Domitilla was his own sister and she died in 69, a dozen years before he came to power. Why he chose to deify her and make her Augusta to boot several years later, a first and last such occurrence in the imperial series, is left unsaid but the cynic in me suspects a perhaps less than wholesome relationship as well.

The memorial issue however was very brief, making this among the very rarest of Denarii to bear an imperial portrait on the obverse.
