| Notes: | Oct 6, 08 - IVLIA AQVILIA SEVERA was the daughter of Quintus Aquilius Sabinus, who was consul twice under Caracalla. She became a Vestal Virgin, which meant a life of celibate religious service. However, the Emperor Elagabalus conceived of a marriage between himself, the chief priest of the eastern sun-god, worshiped at Emesa as Elagabalus, and a chief priestess of the Roman state religion, a Vestal Virgin. He outraged all of Rome by marrying her in 221, but shortly divorced her. Yet after a short marriage to Annia Faustina, he returned to Severa, staying with her until his murder, which she survived, in 222. |
