| Notes: | Oct 16, 08 - The Tituria family traced its descent from the Sabines and perhaps from King Tatius himself. This explains the SABIN and depiction of Tatius on the obverse of this coin.
The reverse of this coin depicts the killing of Tarpeia. Tareia was a virgin from the period of Romulus' war with Tatius and the Sabines. She is supposed to have sacrificed her country for the love of gold. She opened the gate for bracelets of gold. However, the enemy soldiers rewarded her treachery by burying her in shields until she died. |
