| Notes: | Feb 10, 10 - Gratian is one of several fourth century teenage emperors who failed to win lasting support from the army and, consequently, paid the price of life when a breakaway general, Magnus Maximus, declared war on Rome. The story of Gratian therefore echoes the fate of former young and meek emperors who were felled under similar circumstances such as Gordian III, Severus Alexander and his own contemporary Valentinian II.
