| Notes: | Jul 10, 10 - The letters in the exergue identified the year in the reign of Gordian III in which this coin was minted. Unfortunately, the last letter is not legible due to wear making it impossible to be certain of the year this coin was minted. However, it the reverse is correctly attributed (as noted above) to Bland 125 and Howgego 12, the date in the exergue should be ETΔ. This translates to year 4, which was 241 -242 CE.
SNG Aulock 6532 = Sydenham/Malloy 617b (p. 162) is a Tranquillina of Year 4 like this specimen, but with ENTIK on the altar rather than just ENTI or ENT. This reverse, specifically, seems to be a good match to a coin of Gordian III published as Bland 125 and Howgego 12 The ENT (ENTI or ENTIX on other variations) on these coins is interesting, apparently referring to the construction of a wall around Caesarea early in Gordian's reign. My thanks to Carlos Verdura, Tom Mullally and Curtis Clay for their assistance in identifying this coin. |
