About this seller
Notes:Jan 2, 12 - Gallienus was a corrupt but savvy emperor who relied on showering gold on those who protected him at everyone else's expense. With so much of Rome's GDP going into the army a few top-notch generals ensured that a near-endless list of rebellions were one after the other put down under his military machine.

Still, at some point these generals figured Gallienus had gone too far and they agreed to kill the emperor lest their own luck run out too. The top-ranked commander in this treasonous plot was general Claudius. With gold again he was able to turn the initial anger of those still loyal to just-murdered Gallienus into happy soldiers and the new Caesar would prove to be a much better man than his predecessor. Loved as he was he came down with a quickly fatal disease ("plague") and, after a brief struggle, the crown passed to his colleague Aurelian.

The coins of Claudius II are interesting for being very cheap and obtainable in the lower grades. This coin came from a hoard found in Cottenham, England in 1986 and features a dramatic likeness of this leader of the Romans.
