About this seller
Notes:Jan 21, 08 - Gallienus was the son of general Valerian, loved by noble and poor Romans alike. He made his son co-emperor and went off to an ill-fated war with the Persians wherein he lost his freedom and eventually his life.

Meanwhile Gallienus, apparently nowhere near as popular as his father, took over control of the armies and spent the next decade fighting off not only foreign aggressors but one usurper after another. Still, despite bad press from the Historia Augusta, the only extant contemporary historical account, it's clear that he managed to keep the empire together even under the stress of so much fighting which is a tremendous feat considering the strain this also put on the available resources.

He was murdered, in the end, by another usurper who just happened to come from his own inner circle.

His numismatic legacy is myriad. He made coins by the millions, mostly ugly silver washed wretches which substituted for the more substantial silver coins of before. But silver ran out so he made do with what was available.
