| Notes: | Sep 7, 05 - Trajan's sister Marciana apparently preferred a quiet life but between her brother and Plotina (her sister in law) they managed to drag her into the imperial lime light. Both were formally endowed with the empress title of Augusta in the year 105 which would mark the first time two Roman women would hold the distinction concurrently. Her daughter Matidia would also later on be recognized as a third Augusta.
The three are rather rarely found nowadays on any coins because their day was still an age where the Augustae were figureheads whose political functions were meant to be low-key and remote. While the reigning emperor, in this case Trajan, had the vast majority of the coins featuring his own portrait perhaps 1% of the coins leaving the mint honored these empresses and it's likely that no one had a larger run than the others. This Marciana clearly has some high city mileage but still managed to cost over $500 due to its rarity and the small premium attached to a lifetime issue as opposed to a posthumous one. Not many Roman coin collectors can say they have a Marciana! | ||||
