| Notes: | Aug 23, 05 - The emperor Claudius flew under the radar for many years and then found himself emperor right after Caligula was murdered. He was Caligula's uncle so when the Praetorian Guard came looking for him he probably crapped his pants and thought it was game over. Instead they hailed him Caesar and wisked him off to the palace.
He was for the most part a dud emperor, keeping a low profile much in contrast to his nephew. Still, he had the bad grace to hook up with Rome's leading skank, Agrippina Jr. (Nero's mother), who had him wrapped around her fingers. When she got tired of pushing him around, say, when Nero was old enough to be emperor himself and had done away with all other potential rivals, she fed him some bad mushrooms and that was the end of Claudius. So this is what most of Claudius's coins look like. These are big, half-dollar sized coins (or bigger, actually). This one has a worn reverse but I thought the obverse was impressive enough. |
