| Notes: | Aug 23, 05 - Coins of Aurelian are a dime a dozen. Coins of Aurelian that are shiny all over and silvery, well, they're not so cheap. This one is about as nice as you can realistically hope to find one. It is still of a very common reverse type so it's only remarkable for its condition.
Aurelian kicked ass as an emperor. He had a bloodless rise to power after Quintillus found it a more pleasant alternative to commit suicide than to take him on in the field. He then went on to be a hardass and straighten out the empire after a couple of decades of gross mismanagement. He took care of a few insurgent would-be emperors and then did, in fact, go a long way in fixing things up. His personal secretary made some nasty error or other that might have cost him his life when the big boss found out so he covered it up by cooking up a supposed plan Aurelian had to execute his bodyguards and then letting them in on the secret. Of course, the bodyguards crapped their pants and figured it was him or them so they jumped the emperor and killed him. Somehow or other the true nature of what happened came to light. The secretary was summarily executed (no big surprise there) and the bodyguards were so afraid of what was going to happen to them that they marched straight to the Senate in Rome to explain what had happened and that they should name a replacement for the slain Aurelian. I'd love to know if this got them off the hook or not! | ||||
