So what now?

Now that the auctions and keyword agent tools seem to be working more or less bug-free what enhancement would you like to see next?

Sorry to whoever wants custom templates - this seems to be a difficult programming task to implement. If you really need a template or field not already available let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Other than that, any new features you'd like to see?

Ras,

The thing I would like to see is the ability to have coins in multiple albums. For instance, I would like to be able to list a Dupondius of Hadrian with Galley reverse in both my RIC II and my Ships Albums. If I could use three albums I could List an Arcadius Campgate in my Byzantine, RIC X and Campgate albums

Regards,

Matt

That would be great as long as searches didn't pull up multiple listings of the same coin.

I'd suggest tweaking the thumbnail info for certain coin types. IMHO some important fields need to be displayed even in the thumbnail view:

CELTIC - "Region, Tribe" should show in the thumbnail
ROMAN REPUBLIC - "Moneyer" should show in the thumbnail
CHINESE - "Ruler" should show in the thumbnail
ORIENTAL KINGS - "King" should show in the thumbnail
WORLD - "Authority" should show in the thumbnail
BRITISH - "Monarch" should show in the thumbnail

I also think a tutorial/forum dedicated to using the deep search feature would be nice. I'm not sure I'm getting as much out of that feature as I could & some tips would be nice.

Hi Rasiel:
I think actually you mentioned customed templates in response to my request for fields that are related to: Bi-Metallic Coins & Casino Silver Strikes.
Instead of custom templates what about just adding a few fields and key words or categories in existing fields? I have been holding back entering my coins in the hope of a template.
However, if items can be added to existing fields and maybe one or two new fields added that may just do the trick. How many fields can be added or can words be added to the existing fields in a form of a drop downs?

Joe

rasiel 10-21-2008 09:53 PM

joe, you sure have been patient in waiting for this so i will get you a token template. starting from the medal template, please tell me what fields should be replaced. seeing that this will be a new template, try to make it workable for a token anywhere in the world, not just american tokens - and hopefully not add like 10 new fields!

ok to reply straight to this thread.

New sales category?

Ras,

Since one of the perks of membership is the ability to sell, it would be nice to have an area to sell numismatic books & supplies. I know the main focus of Tantalus is the cataloging of collections, but books & supplies are certainly related to our collecting and will always be something the collector needs. I believe such a new area would make this site even more complete & attractive to collectors & buyers.

Rasiel:

I have attached a file.... I used the existing fields and I thought that the template could be named accordingly as a single template... I think I took into consideration everything for the world into one template....and a few new fields.... less than the 10

You might want to have others take a look and or give their input but then again maybe not...

About the only thing really new would be the template names and a few others.

Take a look and let me know your thoguhts.

to the first joe - about the custom templates: the attachment did not come through. would you be able to just list things out in a message right here? i will work on getting the templates as requested. let's see what can be done.

to the second joe - expanding past coins into books was a design goal from the beginning but the site got caught up in a lot of bug fixing, tweaks and fleshing out the tools needed by everyone to manage their collections. i'm still interested in expanding not just into books but stamps and other collectibles. artifacts was recently requested as well. the stumbling block here really is one of money to develop the code. it is, to not mince words, a major financial commitment as the code engine would need to be overhauled and follow a prolonged period of testing to make sure new sections play well with the coins.

right now paid membership is rather low - only about a couple dozen active members. the income is enough to run the dedicated server and offsite backups as well as to (slowly) add a feature here and there but is all the same a slim war chest to plunk down major cash into adding new modules and their templates... particularly if the investment doesn't increase the membership.

i'm still trying to figure out the formula of what it would take to convince coin collectors in general to host their collections here. i know that data entry can be a pain and many users loathe taking pictures of their coins but my thinking has been all along that if i keep upgrading the feature set while holding the membership fees at some point it becomes a "no brainer" to join. it is for this reason i'd prefer to concentrate fully on getting coin collectors of all sorts before spreading myself too thin into other areas.

I believe the functioning snipe tool was a definite step in that direction...I heard some chatter about it on other sites & assume it may have motivated at least a few to join.

Template - Feedback ?

Rasiel:
Well, I posted the fields as you suggested but I did not receive any comment or feedback from you on your thoughts.

I kept all of your fields.... and followed your request to limit any new or changed names.

So.... I'm not sure what is next.... and it seems no one else is commenting.

Also the I saw how the "Joes" were confusing.... thought I would go by Mr-K or JoeK to seperate both of us.

it just means i haven't gotten to it yet.

i'm still trying to fix the feature request to add coins to more than one album. how this happens is not very efficient. i send emails to a number of programmers (there are 3 at the moment) requesting a solution then wait til they get back to me with a proposal. at this point it seems it's not a very easy problem to tackle as many files have to be updated to make this work as requested. meanwhile this request sits on queue waiting. i know you've been waiting for a long time and i remain committed to making these changes... just give me a bit more time.

Time....

Rasiel:

No problem..... whenever I roll out a new technology to my staff I want to make sure it is right.

There is nothing worse than rolling out a broken item to 400 users in my building. I can imagine what you might face.

Reverse legends

Ras,

I'm a recent Tantalus convert, and am slowly getting the hang of it all and building up my collection on the site. One thing I have noticed is that the obverse legend field doesn't seem to cope with the rather lengthy legends of the later Seleucid kings I have been entering - I have run out of room and have had to copy the end of the legend into the description section which is not ideal.
Is there a way around this? Can the field be expanded to allow for these rather verbose legends?

Cheers

Improving the gallery.

Ras,
You should read the thread about how to improve the gallery.

I reckon that the gallery program from www.photopost.com should be downloaded to replace the gallery program that is on here.

The gallery should become a worldwide equivilant of http://www.zeno.ru ,but there would have to be sections for banknotes.

You can get ideas for the information fields here; http://www.coinnetwork.com/group/wor...allerycampaign .

The guidelines for uploading photos should be based on what is here; http://zeno.ru/htm/rules-en.htm .

What do you think?

Aidan.
