Default Summer updates

I'm happy to announce a couple of new changes that make good use of Tantalus' usage of field indexing. The first is that you can now see coin tallies in the Tantalus database in parentheses. The "meat" however of the new changes is that starting with the Roman Imperial coin types you can now view in the browsing and For Sale sections different subcategories that let you "drill down" to records matching specific emperors or denominations.

This concept can and will be carried over to some of the other coin types but wanted to get this out to gauge response. What do you think?

Programming has also been optimized to make searching and navigation faster.

I look forward to your comments!

Smile Tallies & Such

Hi:
I must admit I like to have totals and tallies which gives me a good handle on a collection. However, my major frustration and very slow going for me are the fields.

We talked once before on database field flexibility - most of what I collect and try to keep organized - the fields are not present in the database - in example the items of Bi/Tri Metallic Coinage and Various Casino Silver Strikes - composition and placement.

I have been trying to re-fit the current fields to match what I have but I do get confused on what I'm using for what.

I'm glad the tallies are availble but I would have also liked to see more fields with the option of hiding fields not used.

I have tried the grids and now working with the flips - but they are nothing like a good database of items.

Just my immediate thoughts.

Joe, I appreciate your writing in with suggestions but please next time use the suggestion sub-forum. This one is meant more for announcements from our side.

Anyway, I want to accommodate you but not sure that I can meet your needs either effectively or immediately. After reading your comments I'm not 100% sure if what would best serve you is a couple of additional fields in the medal coin type or a new coin type altogether.

At some point in the future I hope to have in place a way to make up your own coin types with whatever fields of your own choosing in which case only the fields of your own choosing would show up - and perhaps even allow for custom layout of fields. However, I'm not going to lie and give you false hopes: this will be a major project and will take a while to fully take shape. Databases work best in a very structured programming environment and the custom work gets real tricky to get it to play nice with everything else and then make everything run seamlessly.

I hate to turn away one of the few subscribers we have, and believe me I feel bad at your frustration, but I'd rather you see that we're considerate of your time so my most helpful suggestion at this point is that you give us a few months to refine the tools more and then see if we have developed a template that is just right.
