Default Importing CVS File into Access Table

Hi; I need some help. I exported one of my coin folders as a CSV file with no problems but I can't import that file into access without a lot of problems. I usually wind up with the data spread over either 1, 5 or a couple of hundred fields. I tried deleting the first two lines of text from the CSV file (field names) but although that got me closer, the coin descriptions were spread out over several fields looked like one word per field. I have tried all of the available delimeters in Access but still no luck. Is there somethng obvious that I'm missing here?

Thanks, Saturninos

Did you use the pipe ------> | <--------

That is the delimiter that you will need to seperate the database fields. Did you set up an access table with headings? Did you make sure that they were all set to Text with 100 char or so (I think that covers most stuff except for the comments which will need to be set to comments so that they can go greater than 256.

Try opening it in excel ... and then go from excel (after it imports the Txt file) to access which will be loads easier for you as you can link the excel spreadsheet to the table and it will use the excel spreadsheet.

Did you download the spreadsheet from my link and read the guide? That will save you some time I think

Tony has laid out some important tips. Per our programmer:

Start Access
Open desired database (create it if necessary)

Click File->Get External Data -> Import
Select the .txt file exported file

Click the Delimited checkbox
Click Next

Click the Other checkbox, then type "|" (the vertical var / pipe symbol) after the word Other:
Click the First Row Contains Field Names checkbox
if it complains about first row invalid chars, Click OK
Click Next

Select data destination
Click Next

Scroll right through fields to created field, change data type to text
repeat for modified field as well
Click Next

Click Let Access Add Primary Key checkbox
Click Next

Type in desired table name
Click Finish
Click OK

Smile Eureka; It works!

Thank you Raz & Tony. I didn't know about the "|" or the two format changes. Once I did that it worked perfectly. This software of yours is shaping up rather nicely. Congrats and Thanks. Saturninos

Just a quick note:

I have a spreadsheet that is set if you want to use it …. I tried posting it to the forums but it doesn’t allow attachments … so I made a link

http://www.commonbronze.net if you look towards the bottom of the main page you will see a hyper link for Tantalus Import Spreadsheet … that will download the excel spreadsheet for you. (Or you can right click and save as).

First Tab – How to
Second Tab – Explanation of the import fields
Third Tab – Data Entry
Fourth Tab – Spreadsheet to save already for importing

It is really quite easy to do in excel … you might struggle in access as you will need to make sure that you format it correctly … but if you download the spreadsheet you will have an example of the format required.

Thanks,

Thumbs up Thank you

Tony, thanks for the offer but I'm already printing labels with the instructions I got from Raz. The "|" and the format changes had snagged me but now everything is working fine. Thanks, Saturninos.
