Eyes to God?
i'd like to contest the conventional belief that the busts portraying constantine and his sons with the upward gaze are a prayerful metaphor. maybe it's a nitpicking triviality but the posture predates somewhat the accession of constantine. notice in this coin:
http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotvie...ucID=60&Lot=99 how jupiter's head is craned relative to his neck. the cataloguer merely twists the image so that jupiter is looking forward based on RIC's anecdote for trier which points out the TR mintmark is shifted to the left, failing to note that the bust is meant to convey an upwards glance. my thinking is that since the two issues are contemporary, but clearly not linked through a christian motif, that the posture represents a divine nature rather than a reverential one. ras |
