Please help identify square coin
Hi,
I hope someone can help identify what this is - even if it's actually a coin or not! It was included in a collection of coins I inherited, which are mostly UK 12th - 18th century, however this is very different. It's 18mm x 18mm, weighs 7 grams and is impressed on only one side. Does this look like a coin? Any suggestions as to what it might be? Thanks in advance. |

Baktrian?
Quote:
The Baktrian kingdom did issue square coinage, but there should be somehing on both sides. See samples here: http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/nemesi...t=8944&large=0 Joe W. |

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the info and link. I've checked the square coins displayed but they don't really look like the item I have. Guess it's a questions of keeping on searching and learning Thanks again for taking the time to reply. Calum |

Re: Please help identify square coin
Hi Calum, I'm in no way an expert, and am holiday at the moment so can't do too much other than make the suggestion. But, it would seem what you have is a coin weight. Or trade weight, used for measuring goods or weight of coins by a trader or banker. I have seen similar before, & found a lighter one with a different motif myself while metal detecting. Good luck researching.
